Thought for the week (we 9th December 2012)

The weather forecast leading up to Christmas is all about plummeting temperatures and the possibility of snow.

During the very cold weather last year a woman from Kent rang the police to report, of all things, the theft of her snowman. How exactly a snowman can be stolen is in itself a mystery, but due to the fact that she had used pound coins for the eyes and teaspoons for the arms she dialled 999 and nearly got charged with wasting police time.

From her recorded conversation to the police it’s obvious that this was no prank or joke – her snowman was missing and she wanted him back!

Things that seem trivial and unimportant to others may well mean a great deal to us. It may seem that no one is really listening and that can be make us feel even more vulnerable and afraid. It’s then we need to know that God cares and that when we are sure of his presence we can be confident that we are never alone.

The Advent message is one of God’s light and hope entering a cold and hostile world. Yet in loneliness and great poverty Jesus was born and the light of God shone brightly in the darkness bringing peace light and joy to the every aspect of our lives.

Unlike the unfortunate snowman the promises of God are sure and eternal– never to pass away and grounded in his eternal love.
