Burglars made to pay for crime spree after Dyfed Powys Police succeed with Proceeds of Crime order

Two men jailed for seven years earlier this year following a crime spree which saw them burgle over 100 properties across the Dyfed Powys Police force area and parts of England will have to hand back some of the money they made from their crimes.

Polish Nationals, Krzysztof Karmaciuk and Rysard Elert were sentenced at Mold Crown Court on 27th April 2012 following a successful cross border investigation into the activities of an organised crime group committing domestic burglaries across the UK.

At the time, Judge Niclas Parry set a timetable for a Proceeds of Crime application.

After numerous complications the two defendants appeared once more in Mold Crown Court on Thursday 6th December where the following Confiscation Orders were awarded:

Krzysztof Karmaciuk was found to have acquired a criminal benefit of £85,684.00 and to have available assets of £9,686.74.

He was granted 6 months to pay the money or serve an additional 6 months custody in default.

Elert was found to have benefited to the amount of £46,000.00 but, as he has no assets, a nominal £1 order was made in his case.

“It’s thanks to the determination of all officers involved in this investigation that we’ve been able to reclaim some of the money these two made from their crimes,” said Detective Inspector Diane Davies, who co-orindated the operation which led to the arrest of Karmaciuk and Elert. “And Dyfed Powys will continue to ensure that criminals not only get punished for their crimes but are also unable to prosper and benefit financially from their crimes.”
