Keith Davies AM has backed a publicity campaign warning Christmas can be a catalyst for domestic abuse in families where there is already a cycle of abuse.

The Welsh Labour Government’s campaign, running under the strapline, Don’t just wish for it to get better, will run in the form of TV and poster advertising as well as social media throughout the month of December. This campaign is part of a wider Welsh Government initiative to end domestic abuse, with a consultation on legislative proposals launched recently.

In Carmarthenshire a total of 75 domestic incidents were recorded in December last year, and 78 incidents in January 2012. Of which 47 and 55, respectively, were crime related.

Llanelli Women’s Aid, located on Station Road, is open Monday-Friday 9-4.30pm, and has a 24hr helpline 365 days a year on 01554 741212. Or alternatively call the free 24hr national helpline on 0808 80 10 800.

Keith Davies AM said

“I have visited Llanelli Women’s Aid on numerous occasions to see the vital lifeline they offer for victims of domestic abuse. They offer a range of services including access to safe accommodation, transport and emotional support; including for women who do not want refuge.”

“Sadly domestic abuse does happen here in Llanelli, and figures do not take account of the many incidents that go un-reported.”

“I would urge anyone who has suffered domestic abuse, or anyone who suspects it is happening, not to turn a blind eye.”

Welsh Labour’s Communities Minister, Carl Sargeant said

“This campaign sends a clear message that if you see the signs of domestic abuse, not just to hope for the abuse to get better and go away, as it won’t. Our message is to heed the warning signs, take action and seek help or the consequences could be life changing.

“As a society we cannot hope to address this issue until it is recognised by those affected and by society more widely. The Welsh Government is committed to tackling all forms of domestic abuse.”
