RDP Sir Gâr’s Mentro project hosted a free event on December 1st to showcase the business stars of the future at the Old School in Bethlehem.
‘Bethlehem After Dark’ included exhibitions, entertainment and a Christmas market with work and products from rural Carmarthenshire’s young entrepreneurs.
Those present were treated to live performances from Iona Thomas, an artist who recently supported Gary Barlow, Frank Thomas a spoken word artist from Llangadog, the Aunty Depressants group from Llandovery and Rhys Herridge a former west end performer.
There were also two fashion shows from upcoming designers Sara Owen of Que Sarra and Lucy Brooke- Evans of the Cocktail Hat, a film from cinematographer Jonathan McLaughlin, and a fine art exhibition from 1st class honours graduate Ria Bennett.
During the break the audience were able to sample some Baked Well Cakes from Sarah Bennett, Lady of the Lake Lamb from Sion Morgan of Myddfai, buy gifts from Lillies Jewellery and enjoy the Christmas carols from Llangadog YFC.
All of the businesses involved in the event had worked closely with Tomas Marks, the Mentro Development officer and the event was organised to help promote the new businesses and their products.
Michael Dougall owner of Celtic Laser, a new mobile laser activity business said: “I’ve exchanged emails with potential clients already and found it to be a very worthwhile event.”
“I was delighted to be present and to witness an evening that confirmed the vast amount of talent and inspiration of rural Carmarthenshire’s young people to develop their skills and become entrepreneurs in their own right.” Said Councillor Andrew James.
Mentro provides free business support to young people aged between 16 and 30, through RDP Sir Gâr’s Rural Entrepreneurship scheme. The project is funded through the Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales 2007 – 2013 by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
They give free advice and guidance on starting your own business and raise awareness of start-up loans and financial support available. They can also help with the creation of business plans and budgets.
