People in Pendine and Amroth better prepared for flooding

People living in Pendine, Carmarthenshire, and Amroth, Pembrokeshire, have better protection from flooding thanks to a new scheme by Environment Agency Wales.

There are 16 homes and businesses at risk of flooding in Pendine, and eight in Amroth. All of these are at risk of tidal flooding during high tides and stormy conditions.

Both locations have a history of frequent flooding, whereby the coastal roads, and properties along the coast line have been affected on numerous occasions. Many people in Pendine were affected by flooding as recently as last month.

An Environment Agency Wales investigation found that these properties could benefit from individual property protection measures.

This involves placing purpose made temporary flood barriers in doorways during a flood. These are easy to fit and can be put in place when a flood warning is issued.

Steve Brown, from Environment Agency Wales said:

“This year we’ve seen flooding cause disruption to homes and businesses across the country. These flood barriers will mean that these people who have experienced flooding in the past will be better protected for the future.

“As well as delivering flood barriers to each property, we made sure that they fitted smoothly and squarely into doorways. We also showed people how they should be used and we are confident that they can install them when the next flood happens.

“We can’t always prevent flooding but we can help communities prepare for it.”

The scheme has been funded by the Welsh Government.
