Environment Agency Warns of Ongoing Flood Risk across Wales

Environment Agency Wales is asking people to remain alert to the risk of localised flooding as forecasts indicate that more heavy rainfall is likely to affect large parts of Wales.

A band of heavy rain is expected to hit Wales at around lunchtime tomorrow (Sunday) with more than three inches (80 millimetres) possible over high ground in Snowdonia.

And up to two inches (50 millimetres) is expected across other high ground such as the Cambrian Mountains and the Brecon Beacons.

This comes only 24 hours after the previous rain band crossed Wales on Friday night and Saturday morning.

This, combined with prolonged spells of heavy rainfall over Christmas, mean that the ground remains saturated and rivers could rise quickly after any further rain.

Currently, five Flood Warnings and 40 Flood Alerts have been issued across Wales and it’s likely that further Alerts and Warnings will be issued on Sunday and Monday.

Graham Hillier, from Environment Agency Wales said:

“We’re asking people to take extra care as the risk of flooding continues.

“Our officers have been working hard over the Christmas period to clear blockages from rivers and make sure our flood defences remain in good condition.

“We’re advising people to keep an eye on weather forecasts, local news reports and our website, which is updated every 15 minutes, for the latest Flood Alerts or Warnings in their area.”

People are reminded about the dangers of flood waters and not to walk or drive through floods.

Only a few inches of flood water can knock a person off their feet, and two feet of water can float a car.
