RESIDENTS in Carmarthenshire are being urged to recycle their Christmas trees and get a free bag of compost.

Figures show that in the UK approximately 250 tonnes of real Christmas trees that could have been recycled are simply thrown out after the festive season.

Twelfth night or January 6th is traditionally the time to take down your Christmas decorations so if you are taking down your tree make sure you take it to your local household waste recycling centre so that it can be composted.

And if you take your tree to Trostre (Llanelli), Wernddu (Ammanford), Nantycaws (Carmarthen) or Whitland you will get a free bag of Merlin’s Magic Compost courtesy of CWM Environmental Ltd.

Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “We produce a lot more rubbish at this time of year so it is very important we recycle as much of it as possible. Christmas trees are classed as green waste so please take to your nearest recycling centre so that they can be made into compost.

“Remember you can also recycle your Christmas cards and wrapping paper in your blue bag and if you have any unwanted gifts don’t just put them in the back of a cupboard, why not give them to a local charity shop or make some money and sell them online or at a car boot sale instead.”

If you are having a post-Christmas clear out remember to recycle any old electrical items from fridges and televisions to hairdryers and mobile phones – anything with a plug or battery. Please take to your nearest waste recycling centre or for smaller items one of the 10 electricals banks throughout the county. The council also offers a bulky waste collection service for a small charge.

Don’t forget you can recycle old batteries too; most shops and supermarkets now provide battery banks in store or take to your nearest waste recycling centre.
