ACTION is being taken to try and tackle dog fouling in Kidwelly’s Parc Stephens.

Carmarthenshire County Council and Kidwelly Town Council are joining forces following complaints of dog fouling in the park.

Rugby matches have had to be stopped midway through a game to clean up dog mess on the pitch.

Environmental enforcement officers have stepped up patrols and have fined a number of people in the town for failing to clean up after their dogs.

However, they have failed to catch anyone in the park despite carrying out patrols at different times of the day.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones, local member Cllr Keith Davies and Area Environmental Enforcement Officer Mike Roberts met with Kidwelly Town Mayor Jeanette Gilasbey and Town Clerk Geraint Thomas.

They have now agreed to supply new signs to the town council to put up in the park to warn people.

Officers will also continue to carry out patrols and anyone caught can be issued with a fixed penalty of £75 or prosecuted in court where the maximum fine is £1,000.

New litter bins will also be installed in the Parc Pendre area.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “Myself and Cllr Keith Davies have been in discussions with the town council about dog fouling at Parc Stephens and enforcement officers have been carrying out regular patrols during the early hours, working hours and evenings to catch the offenders.

“It is very difficult to catch people in the act as officers have to be in the right place at the right time so to speak. If anyone has any information which may help I would urge them to please get in touch.

“Dog mess left anywhere is a serious health risk and I am appalled that people are leaving their dogs defecate on the rugby field and not clean it up. We will continue to carry out patrols and will not hesitate to fine people.”

A major campaign is underway to clean up Carmarthenshire and residents are being urged to play their part and help the council catch those responsible for dog fouling.
