Fancy a walk in woods near Llandybie that could lead to helping one of Carmarthenshire’s rarest small mammals?
Volunteers are being asked to join a hunt for signs of dormice at Glyn Hir Mansion, near Llandybie. Dormice leave distinctive tooth marks when they gnaw into hazel nuts and volunteers can help the council’s biodiversity officer, along with a local dormouse expert to comb the woods in search of the discarded nuts that will prove that dormice are present.
So far previous nut hunts around in the county have found evidence of dormice in a number of new sites and nest boxes put up to help these elusive animals.
Biodiversity Officer, Isabel Macho, said: “You don’t have to be a wildlife expert to take part – anyone interested in wildlife and enthusiastic about dormice can provide invaluable help. With the help of volunteers we have already discovered some important new sites for dormice in an area of Carmarthenshire where we know little about them”.
The nut hunt will take place on Tuesday 26th February, and participants should meet at 10.00 a.m, at the car park at Glyn Hir Mansion, Grid ref: 639151. For more information and to register interest please contact Isabel Macho on 01558 825390 or Biodiversity@carmarthenshire.gov.uk.
