Welsh Mountain Bike Series – Round 1

Sunday 10th Feb 2013 saw Round one of the Welsh Mountain Bike Series taking place at a very wet and windy Margam Park.

Over 160 riders raced in what many described as the worst weather they have ever seen at a bike race. After consistent heavy rain all day Saturday, Saturday night and all day Sunday the water was pouring off the hill and down towards the arena.

Our only rider to brave these conditions was tough girl Lucy O, building on her recent enduro riding experience at the Red Kite events, she put in an inspiring performance to finish 3rd. A bad start saw Lucy at the back of the field on lap one but she did not panic and settled down, applying her excellent technical skills and smooth riding style. She powered her way around a trecherous course, lap after lap, picking off riders and clawing her way back up the field to finish 3rd female rider on the line !!

Lucy, who recently finishing 7th overall in the Welsh Cyclocross league in her first year of competition, will now contest the remaining 3 events in the Welsh mountain bike series.

As well as the riders, there were of course a team of volunteers and organisers standing in the rain all day and thanks has to go to them: Jay and Maddie from Fully Sussed did a great job as did Jonny from Scrumptious Catering keeping everyone warm with hot drinks and bacon sandwiches. All the volunteer marshals were fantastic-they really did stand in the rain all day and the race can’t go ahead without them so thanks to them.

Lastly, thanks to the sponsors who gave some great prizes. The under 16 prizes were all supplied by local retailer Tredz bikes who also provided tech support on the day.

Well done Lucy ! Round 2 in the series takes place at Coed y Brenin in just a few weeks’ time.
