Plaid Cymru Llanelli has voiced concern about the effects of rising poverty on our communities. Increasingly we are seeing more and more food banks being set up including here in Llanelli.
Throughout Wales there are now 23 food banks in operation mainly focused in West Wales and the Valleys.
Everyday an increasing number of people are falling below the poverty line.
Â
Ffion Larsen, Plaid Bigyn Town Councillor said:
Â
âAs a result of the toxic, austerity cuts that have been imposed by this U.K Government, many Llanelli residents have had no option but to visit food banks as they rely so heavily on the service provided. Many families are continuing to struggle to cover the cost of daily essentials such as shelter, warmth, clothing, food and fuel costs in our communities. We urge the U.K Government to change course and stop attacking the most vulnerable in our society.â
Â
Martin Davies, Plaid Hengoed Rural Councillor added:
âThe causes of poverty must be properly addressed by Government, We are calling on the U.K Government to reverse these savage cuts. The Welsh Government needs to develop our fragile economy and take action to protect our communities . Options recently proposed by Plaid Cymru include to establish a Bank Of Wales to lend to local industries also creating sustainable opportunities and introducing a living wage to address the inbalance in income between different regions of the U.K.
