The voters of Eastleigh have certainly rocked the political boat in last week’s by-election.
With the increasing popularity of UKIP who came second in the poll alarm bells must surely be ringing as far as the other parties are concerned. Previous MP Chris Hume is now facing a charge of perverting the course of justice for implicating his wife for an offence he himself has now admitted.
His fall from grace is sad indeed.
The slippery slope of not telling the truth, or even worse of involving others in deceit nearly always ends this way. With emotions such as anger, recrimination and even revenge thrown in we see human nature at its worse and the bottom of that slope is never a good place to be.
Is it possible then when every human instinct is pulling in the opposite direction there’s the possibility for forgiveness and reconciliation to emerge?
Forgiveness is never easy, especially when we feel let down or betrayed by those closest to us. It’s also true that none of us have the right to judge those who find forgiveness difficult because we all have our own stories to tell.
Ultimately, however, forgiveness will bring us peace.
‘Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive others who trespass against us’ is the prayer of all who would seek a way through their hurt and will allow, before it will become too late, love and not hate to have the final word.
