Scarlets help council tackle recycling

THE Scarlets have teamed up with Carmarthenshire County Council to encourage people to recycle their rubbish.

The campaign sees Scarlets stars Emyr Phillips, Dan Newton and Daniel Thomas helping to promote recycling, both at home and when out and about in the county.

It is important we recycle paper, cardboard, cans and plastic in the blue bags and remember to use the green bins for any food waste so that it can be composted.

Residents are also being reminded that they can recycle on the go by using one of the council’s street litter recycling bins that are dotted across the county.

The bins can be used to recycle cans, paper and plastic when out in towns and villages and some tourist attractions too such as the National Botanic Garden and the Millennium Coastal Park.

The Scarlets trio can be seen in posters and adverts across Carmarthenshire with slogans including ‘Let’s tackle recycling together’; ‘Don’t end up in the sin bin – recycle!’ and ‘Kick litter into touch – recycle it!’

Hooker Emyr Phillips from Llandovery said: “We are really pleased to be able to support such an important campaign. It is very easy to recycle all of your rubbish and every little bit will help make a difference to the environment long term.

“We would like to encourage everyone to join us to tackle recycling and kick litter into touch!”

Carmarthenshire is currently recycling / composting around 50% of its rubbish and is hopeful of reaching the 52% target, set by Welsh Government, by April this year.

However, the targets will only get tougher, with a figure of 58% by 2015/16; rising to 64% by 2019/20 and 70% by 2024/25.

Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “I am delighted that the Scarlets are supporting our recycling campaign.

“It is vital we recycle as much as we can in our blue bags and use the green bins for all our food waste. Even if all you have is a few teabags and some meat bones, please put it out in the green bin for collection, it doesn’t matter if it isn’t full.

“If residents are not sure what goes in their blue bags, they need a replacement food bin or they are not sure if it is a blue bag or black bag week, then please get in touch with us. Our officers are here to help residents with all their rubbish and recycling queries.”
