Brief project updates:

A MSc student at Swansea University spent the summer at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park studying the dragonfly population there. Dragonflies are vital components of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and the student studied their specific habitat requirements and habitat requirements at specific life stages or between the sexes. Results show that the frequency of matures, immatures, males, females and sub-orders differed between different vegetation types, suggesting they have different habitat requirements. It seems there is a clear difference in habitat use across the landscape, meaning that areas away from the breeding wetland need to be considered for effective dragonfly conservation.

Water vole habitat quality survey. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales has undertaken a habitat-quality survey for water vole in Llanelli as looking at linkage, habitat quality and enhancement opportunities in the areas radiating out from the known water vole site at Morfa Berwig. This was funded by EAW and CCW grant funding LBAP. The Carmarthenshire LBAP Wetland subgroup will use the maps created to inform future project work.

Pwlliau Cochion Common – ditch blocking. This CCW LBAP funded project is to implement appropriate management at this common which comes under the council’s responsibility and which has important wetland (peat) habitats and associated species. Drainage is negatively impacting the common’s wetland habitats, however it was discovered that three farms depend on water flow from the common so that total blocking of the outflow pipe would be unacceptable. Instead it was agreed that blocking the ditch in three locations was acceptable as this would slow down and not stop the flow. The council’s common land officer, CCW and Commons Vision have worked together on the project and work should be completed in by early March.

CCW LBAP grant funding has enabled a number of dormouse nut hunts to be undertaken with great success. Nut hunts at Llyn Llech Owain and Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park with volunteers, were both successful with a new record for the latter site. In December a dormouse nut was confirmed for the first time at Ynysdawela Nature Park in Brynamman and also (potentially) harvest mouse nests! In February hunts will take place at Coleg Sir Gar in Ammanford and Glyn Hir Mansion near Llandybie.

Diweddariadau prosiect byr:

Treuliodd myfyriwr MSc ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe yr haf ym Mharc Gwledig Llyn Llech Owain yn astudio’r boblogaeth gwas y neidr yno. Mae’r gwas y neidr yn elfennau hollbwysig mewn ecosystemau daearol a dyfrol ac astudiodd pa fathau yn union o gynefinoedd oedd eu hangen arnynt a beth oedd eu gofynion cynefin ar adegau gwahanol o’u bywydau ac a oedd unrhyw ofynion gwahanol rhwng gwrywod a benywod. Dangosodd y canlyniadau fod amlder creaduriaid aeddfed, anaeddfed, gwrywod, benywod ac is-urddau yn amrywio rhwng gwahanol fathau o lystyfiant, sy’n awgrymu fod ganddynt ofynion cynefin gwahanol. Mae’n ymddangos fod gwahaniaeth pendant o ran y mathau o gynefinoedd a ddefnyddir ar draws y tirlun, sy’n golygu fod angen ystyried gwaith cadwraeth gwas y neidr effeithiol yn yr ardaloedd i ffwrdd o’r gwlyptir bridio.

Arolwg ansawdd cynefinoedd llygod y dŵr. Mae Ymddiriedolaeth Bywyd Gwyllt De a Gorllewin Cymru wedi cynnal arolwg o ansawdd cynefinoedd llygod y dŵr yn Llanelli er mwyn edrych ar gysylltiadau, ansawdd cynefinoedd a chyfleoedd datblygu yn yr ardaloedd yn ffinio â safle presennol llygod y dŵr ym Morfa Berwig. Arianwyd yr arolwg gan arian grant LBAP gan EAW a CCW. Bydd is-grŵp Gwlyptir LBAP Sir Gaerfyrddin yn defnyddio’r mapiau a grëwyd ar gyfer datblygu mwy o waith prosiect i’r dyfodol.

Pwlliau Cochion – blocio ffosydd. Pwrpas y prosiect hwn sy’n cael ei ariannu gan LBAP CCW yw cyflwyno trefniadau rheolaeth priodol yn y darn hwn o dir comin y mae’r cyngor yn gyfrifol amdano ac sy’n cynnwys cynefinoedd gwlyptir (mawn) pwysig a rhywogaethau cysylltiol. Mae’r draeniad yn cael effaith negyddol ar gynefinoedd gwlyptir y tir comin, ond darganfuwyd fod tair fferm yn dibynnu ar lif dŵr o’r tir comin, sy’n golygu y byddai cau’r bibell all-lif yn gyfan gwbl yn annerbyniol. Cytunwyd yn hytrach fod cau’r ffos mewn tri lleoliad yn dderbyniol gan y byddai hynny’n arafu’r llif yn hytrach na’i atal yn llwyr. Mae swyddog tir comin y cyngor, CCW a Commons Vision wedi cydweithio ar y prosiect a dylai’r gwaith gael ei orffen ym mis Chwefror.

Mae arian grant LBAP CCW wedi’n galluogi i gynnal nifer o helfeydd cnau pathewod llwyddiannus iawn. Roedd helfeydd cnau gan wirfoddolwyr yn Llyn Llech Owain a Pharc Coetir Mynydd Mawr yn llwyddiannus iawn, ac fe grëwyd record newydd ar gyfer yr ail safle. Ym mis Rhagfyr cadarnhawyd cneuen pathew am y tro cyntaf ym Mharc Natur Ynysdawela ym Mrynaman ynghyd â’r posibilrwydd o nythod llygod medi! Ym mis Chwefror cynhelir helfeydd yng Ngholeg Sir Gâr yn Rhydaman a Phlasty Glyn Hir ger Llandybie.
