Dairy cows are typically playful and nurturing animals but they are left to suffer from debilitating lameness and painful udder infections that cause them chronic pain for their entire lifetimes. Don’t cows deserve better?
Research shows that EU’s dairy cows typically live in cramped housing and are fed a poor diet. This in turn makes them more prone to falling ill. Without any guidelines on dairy cow welfare, housing and diet, it is impossible to ensure that these animals receive the adequate level of care they need. Surely, a population of 23 million animals deserves at least the basic levels of protection!
Cows by nature like to roam and graze on pasture. However, since most dairy farms confine the animals indoors, these cows never feel the grass beneath their hooves or sunshine on their backs. There is a simple fix to this problem — create uniform standards that address the animals’ shelter, diet, veterinary care and behavioural needs.
