A LLANELLI woman has been fined £150 for throwing rubbish from a car.
Sarah Jane Otter, aged 25, of Pendderi Road, Bryn, was also ordered to pay £250 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge by Carmarthen magistrates.
She was convicted in absence to an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
The court heard that on October 31 last year, council environmental enforcement officers were on patrol in James Street when they saw rubbish being thrown from a parked car.
The officers approached the vehicle and explained what they had seen. The woman sitting in the driver’s seat admitted the offence.
She was issued with a fixed penalty notice for £75, but failed to pay it, despite a reminder letter being sent.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said he hoped this case would help to deter others from dropping litter.
He said: “Dropping litter is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated. The council’s enforcement officers carry out regular patrols across the county and anyone caught dropping litter is fined.
“The council is working hard to keep the county clean and we will not hesitate to take action against those people intent on spoiling it for others.”
