A MAN has been fined for throwing rubbish out of a car window at McDonald’s in Llanelli.
Thomas Jack Watson, aged 20, was convicted in absence to an offence under Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 at Carmarthen Magistrates Court.
The prosecution was brought by Carmarthenshire County Council.
The court heard that on October 23 last year, council environmental enforcement officers were parked in McDonald’s in Trostre Retails Park when they saw rubbish being thrown from a car window.
The officers identified themselves and explained what they had seen. The driver was issued with a fixed penalty notice for £75; however, he failed to pay it, despite a reminder letter being sent.
Watson, of Selby Terrace, Maryport, Cumbria, was fined £150 by magistrates and ordered to pay £250 towards prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “Dropping litter is against the law, whether it is discarding rubbish from a vehicle, throwing cigarette ends or spitting out chewing gum.
“Enforcement officers regularly patrol the county and issue fixed penalty notices to anyone caught dropping litter; and if they fail to pay, they will be prosecuted in court instead.
“The council is determined to keep Carmarthenshire clean and safe for both residents and visitors.”
