Support for preserving the only surviving GWR Type 2 Signal Box in Wales, the Llanelli West Box is growing!
We wrote earlier about how Your Llanelli had contacted CADW to ask the to list the historic box. Now Nia Griffith MP has emailed us to share her opinion. Nia wrote:
“ I am absolutely delighted to hear that the Llanelli West Signal Box has been listed by CADW. As I understand it, the signal box is still in use at present but Network Rail have plans to switch over to a remotely controlled system, potentially leaving the box for demolition.”
“Now that it has been listed, we need to find out the risks, practicalities and costs of either keeping it where it is or moving it to the other side of the station to the site of the Railway Goods Shed. The recent feasibility study for the Goods Shed has identified the potential future use of the building as a community arts hub, arts in the broadest sense, and we on the Goods Shed Trust are very anxious also to include a heritage corner.”
“There is plenty of room to relocate the signal box to the land adjacent to the Goods Shed. I certainly want us to keep the signal box in the Llanelli area. It could even be used with the Goods Shed during a dramatisation of the 1911 Llanelli Railway Strike.”
Network Rail have still not commented, but Kevin Madge Carmarthenshire County Council Leader told us that:
“I believe this is part of the heritage of Llanelli and I would be glad if it can be preserved for the future.”
We at Your Llanelli hope that powers that be can work togerther to sort out the building’s current precarious position,
