Dyfed Powys Police and partners have been working together targeting rogue traders as part of a national day of action to address the problem.

Rogue traders, as well as cold callers and distraction burglars, have a devastating impact on peopleā€™s lives. They can strike anywhere, and prey especially on the elderly and vulnerable.

Police officers, council official from trading standards, HM Revenue and Customs, British Transport Police and Natural Resources Wales have been out and about across the force area to disrupt any rogue trader activity and make sure they are dealt with appropriately within the law.

ā€œWeā€™ve been working with partners on a day of action, aiming to coordinate our tactics so that we can maximise our disruption of any rogue trader activity and see that they face the consequences of their actions,ā€ said Detective Chief Inspector Greg Williams. ā€œWeā€™ve also been working together to improve our intelligence and further develop the methods we employ to catch these people.

ā€œAgain, we remind homeowners, and especially the elderly and vulnerable, to beware of rogue traders. They may call at your house offering services, or be on the look-out for scrap metal, which they will identify and return for at another time.

ā€œOften, they take money under the pretence of doing work, when no actual work has been carried out.

ā€œThink about who is calling at their home before answering the door, and to stick to the following guidelines:

  • If youā€™re not sure, donā€™t open the door
  • Donā€™t sign on the spot
  • Always ask for an identity card and look up the organisation to check the salespersonā€™s identity. Phone the company but use telephone numbers from your local directory
  • Don’t get taken in by sales banter or high pressure selling techniques.
  • Always shop around for the best price
  • Check whether traders are members of the Local Authority Assured Trader Schemes or the Government Trust Mark Scheme
  • Read the small print and double check the facts
  • Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion
  • Never pay cash up front
  • Trust your instincts – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Itā€™s OK to say no. Remember itā€™s your doorstep and your decision. If you feel pressured for any reason ask the person to leave
  • If you suspect a rogue trader caller is at your door call 999
