THE council is looking at introducing new dog control orders on county beaches.
It includes the beaches at Llanelli, Burry Port, Cefn Sidan, Ferryside, Llansteffan and Pendine.
A further order to ‘Keep Dogs on Leads at All Times’ could also be introduced on land at Llanelli Beach including the Millennium Coastal Path; land at Burry Port Harbour; land at Ferryside beach and at the Green, Llansteffan.
These new dog control orders will replace the existing byelaws at Llansteffan and Cefn Sidan.
A public consultation exercise will soon be carried out to get residents views before any decisions are made.
If successful, the council will look at introducing similar orders for other areas such as children’s play areas, sports pitches, bowling greens and skate board parks.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “We know there is a lot of public support for these orders in specific areas.
“However, it is important we try to balance the interests of dog owners who need to exercise their dogs, with the need for people – particularly children – to have access to safe dog-free areas.
“We are looking at carrying out a phased, common sense approach and we will soon be consulting with residents to get their views.”
Failure to comply with the dog control orders could result in a fixed penalty notice for £75 or prosecution in court where the maximum fine is £1,000.
