The Carmarthenshire Labour group of Councillors today supported the creation of a protocol for those being awarded the freedom of Carmarthenshire. Being awarded the freedom of the county is an exceptional award, and is only given in rare circumstances to those who have given exceptional service to the community of the county.
Previous recipients have mainly been regiments of the armed forces, including the Welsh Guards.
Councillor Kevin Madge, when proposing the protocols, said:
“We have given this award in exceptional circumstances in the past, it’s important we clear up the nomination process and are transparent with the awards system.”
The creation of a protocol received unanimous support from the Labour Group and Independent members, while Plaid members were split over the protocol.
Councillor Higgins, secretary of the Labour Group, said after the decision was made:
“It’s disappointing that Plaid Cymru couldn’t support the protocol, it’s only been used to thank the armed forces for their dedication and sacrifice for our county. I can’t see why Plaid Cymru couldn’t support the protocol, as any nominations would have to have their support as a requirement of any future award. At least now people can see how it is done, and that is very important in any honours system”.
The labour group supported the creation of the protocol, for the nomination or organisations or individuals for the freedom of Carmarthenshire to become transparent and clear for the public and all those involved.
