The Gambling Commission has imposed an £8,000 financial penalty on a licensed bookmaker who persisted in operating betting in pubs in West Wales.

Celtic Racing CB Ltd knowingly provided facilities for betting from a number of alcohol licensed premises in and around South West Wales before being exposed by an – investigation run by the Gambling Commission, supported by Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire Local Authorities. Celtic Racing CB Ltd has also been formally warned by the Commission and has had an additional licence condition placed on its operating licence.

The Commission has worked consistently with licensing authorities and the police to warn bookmakers, publicans and club officials that commercial betting is not allowed in pubs and clubs. A quick guide on the law is available on the www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk website.

Earlier this month three men were fined by Magistrates in Worcester after the Gambling Commission and Worcestershire Regulatory Services supported a West Mercia Police investigation into illegal gambling at a pub in Tenbury Wells.

The Commission’s Director of Regulatory Operations, Nick Tofiluk said:

“We expect licensed betting operators and those managing alcohol licensed premises to avoid offering betting facilities in pubs.

“These cases show that if individuals persist in illegally offering pub betting the Commission and its local partners will take significant action against them.”
