Waat 4 challenge promises to be another successful event, even attracting some celebrity competitors

There’s still over a month to go until the WAAT 4 challenge takes place in the Brecon Beacons and organisers already have 74 teams who’ve entered, leading to speculation that this year’s event may be the most popular one ever.

It’s going to be held on Saturday 22nd June, with teams walking either 30 or 40 km over some of the most beautiful terrain in the Brecon Beacons.

This year teams will be joined by Phil Packer, a former soldier who was badly injured while serving for his country out in Iraq back in 2008.

“I have to say I’m overwhelmed that he’s supporting us this year,” said organiser Gary Philpott, who started the event to raise money for the Welsh Air Ambulance Trust. “Hopefully it will mean we get even more teams coming along, which will help us raise even more money for our charities.

“Once again, the main beneficiaries will be the Wales Air Ambulance and Brecon Mountain Rescue, but there will be funds for smaller local charities and funds too. And we’re hoping to break the £100,000 barrier of the total amount raised since this event started five years ago.

“It’s not just emergency and military personnel who can join this event. It’s open to anyone.

This is our fifth year, and we see a lot of our teams coming back year after year. I think that’s because it’s more than a charity event. It’s a social occasion.

“We have dinner provided the night before, a hog roast once the challenge has been completed, so everyone can really bond together and share their experience.
