Residents rush to buy half-price compost bins

A TOTAL of 143 compost bins were sold in a special half-price sale held during Compost Awareness Week.

The one-off sale was organised by the council’s waste and recycling section at the Co-op car park in Cross Hands.

The compost bins were available to Carmarthenshire residents only at a subsidised price of just £5.

The aim was to encourage householders to go green by home composting their garden and kitchen waste.

Lorena Prist, from Llangunnor, said: “Home composting is totally new to me. I try my best to reduce my waste by recycling as much as I can as it is very important. I am really looking forward to learning more about composting at home as I have a small vegetable plot in my garden, and it would be great to be able to make my own compost to grow my own vegetables.”

Residents are being urged to reduce, reuse and recycle as we can no longer throw everything away as rubbish.

The county has strict targets to meet to reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill and increase its recycling rate.

Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “Many people don’t realise how simple it is to home compost or just how much of their household waste can actually be composted; from grass and hedge clippings to vegetable peelings, egg shells, tea bags and shredded cardboard.

“It helps to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and you’ll be left with a rich soil conditioner to help your plants flourish.”

If you don’t have a garden, remember that you can still recycle vegetable peelings, fruit cores, tea bags and egg shells by using your green food bins.
