Poor old Bertie Bee, the friendly bee who always seems to be working harder than his peers in a busy beehive, spending his day pollinating boring old apples when he’d actually prefer to be free to pollinate wild flowers?
Bertie Bee is one of the main characters in the popular show ‘We Need Bees’ by Theatr na nÓg which will be buzzing its way to the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9.
The family-friendly adventure story ‘ We Need Bees,’ with original music composed by Jak Poore, tells the tale of Bertie’s battle for survival for the sake of the colony.
In a moment of rebellion, he leaves the hive and chooses to follow his heart instead of the rules and goes to the woods in search of flowers. Reluctantly, his friend Bron follows him and, before they know it, they have lost all track of time.
The little honeybees can’t remember the way back and end up deeper in the woods. Tired and scared but determined not to give up, they set out on a courageous journey of discovery, encountering a wood full of wildlife, to find their way home.
The Neath-based theatre company, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is renowned for its work for young audiences. There will be three performances per day, at 11.30am (in Welsh); and at 2pm and 4pm (in English).
