Thought for the week (we 9th June 2013)

It was sixty years ago this week that Her Majesty the Queen’s coronation was celebrated at Westminster Abbey.

My recollections as a six year old are quite sketchy but a few remain. One was of everyone in our street gathered around a twelve inch black and white TV watching with sense of wonder events that were happening in London.

Then there were street parties and the coronation mug which were given to us children as a memento of this great historical event.   The following month along the chosen route thousands came out to greet the newly crowned Queen on her visit to Llanelli and that was a day to remember!  Her reign still continues and this remarkable anniversary of over sixty years of untiring services is something to celebrate.

In times when we can be so disillusioned by the egotism and greed of some politicians the Queen remains the best example of integrity  service and continuity; keeping faithfully the solemn vow made on her accession to the throne  ‘That her whole life whether short or long would be devoted to the service of the people’.

Our lives are certainly not as documented but we all have our own stories to tell.  There have been times along the way when we too have celebrated occasions such as anniversaries and family events which have been special to us and those we love.

Looking back in gratitude and thanksgiving as we have recalled the good times while maybe at the same time knowing that heartfelt sadness because those we loved the most may no longer be with us.

It is then we need to know that God keeps his promises because he is full of compassion and love. Whoever we are, whatever our background we are valued and loved by God.  Life may be tough, people may let us down but God is faithful.

That’s why in all the changing scenes of our lives we can give thanks and celebrate!
