RDP Sir Gâr’s Rural Community Inclusion (RCI) project has funded a Community Translation Project for Trywydd, the not for profit translation organisation.
Trywydd have employed a Community Translator, Eirian Williams, to offer English/Welsh interpreting and written translation services at a heavily discounted rate.
Eirian will work closely with communities to improve the skills that they need in order to organise and conduct bilingual events, and identify individuals to assist them with providing simultaneous translation in community events. Trywydd hope this will help them to reach their wider objective of promoting the use of Welsh at a community level in Carmarthenshire.
A similar project, also funded with a Rural Community Inclusion grant, has proved a great success in Pumsaint. The Coronation Hall committee used the funding to purchase translation equipment which they now use and also hire out to local community groups.
Esme Jones, member of the committee, said:
“The grant enabled the Hall to offer bilingual activities in a rural community where there is a high percentage of local people who are unable to speak the Welsh language. Now everyone can enjoy community events.”
RCI offers a package of support that is designed to increase access to basic services and facilities in rural communities – including broadband service. The project is funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Registered charities, voluntary organisations, town or community councils, social enterprises and not for profit organisations all stand to benefit from RCI support. If you would like to find out more about the Rural Community Inclusion grants then please contact Carmarthenshire County Council’s Community Bureau on 01269 590 216.
