Carmarthenshire County Council’s Tywi Centre has received initial support for a £681,900 bid from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) under its Skills for the Future programme for the ‘Building our Heritage: Training in building craft skills across Wales’ project, it was announced today.
The project aims to continue to develop a skills base to repair and maintain the pre-1919 vernacular buildings of Wales.
Development funding of £13,700 has also been awarded to help the Tywi Centre progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.
The Tywi Centre currently runs the HLF funded Foundations in Heritage Bursary Scheme which has supported twenty eight people gain NVQ3 in Heritage Carpentry, Stonemasonry or Lime Plastering. Following from the success of this scheme the ‘Building our Future’ project will provide opportunities for 30 people across Wales to follow an exciting and comprehensive training programme which will lay solid foundations for a career in the building sector.
The project will also provide opportunities for 10 women to develop heritage construction skills through a 6 month introductory training programme.
Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “I am delighted that the Tywi Centre is receiving this grant. This is a very worthwhile project to develop the skills needed to preserve our building heritage and I am also pleased that it will introduce women to the skills needed for this work.”
