Shane Williams’ call to the Lions squad was quite a surprise. Having retired from International rugby and currently playing in Japan Wales’ record try scorer was drafted into the British Lions and within hours of the call was on a plane to Australia ready and willing to join a squad seriously affected by injury.

Being interviewed before leaving Shane spoke not only of his surprise but of his commitment in gelling with and working out tactics and form with his team mates. Whether his appearance will be a one off or a prelude to inclusion in the rest of the tour we shall have to wait and see.

There’s no doubt that Warren Galtland and his coaching team knew on whom to call and Shane with his usual calm and professionalism has risen to the occasion.

Life can have its ups and downs and there will always be times when we will need someone just to talk to or whose advice and wisdom we know we can rely. We hear much today of how helpful and even life changing it can be when youngsters have someone older to just come alongside them so that in sharing and mentoring encourage their wisdom and maturity.

In the book of Proverbs we read:

‘Trust the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight’.

There’s a whole wealth of wisdom and hope which emerge from the Bible which can make all the difference when life is tough and we are at the crossroads of decision making in our lives.

It is then we need to know that help is never far away because true to his word God will never leave those who call upon him. Perhaps it’s time we made that call! Well done Shane, you’re going to make the Lions roar.
