A student from Trimsaran who was told her trip to Australia had been cancelled due to a charity’s financial crisis, is using her determination to raise the cash herself.

Aspiring conservationist Lauren Evans, an A Level student at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus, had raised the required £3,000 through a charity scheme but was told on the day of her A Level exam that due to the charity’s insolvency, the trip was likely to be cancelled.

As a geography student, 18 year-old Lauren planned to take part in an Australian conservation programme and use the visit to develop her experience working with environmental issues. Her first move after finding out the trip was at risk was towards her college student support team who have already promised her help from the Principal’s Charity and Student Union funds.

She now needs to raise the final £500. “Lauren’s determination to turn this situation around made us want to help,” said Steve Kelshaw, director of Learner Support at Coleg Sir Gâr. “Lauren’s confidence has grown tremendously since she’s been at college, so from my perspective the trip will benefit her personal growth and the countdown is on to help her raise money by the end of the month.”

If Lauren raises the cash she needs, she will also be reunited with family who haven’t seen her since she was eight years-old.

Lauren said: “I was shocked when I had the letter saying the trip was off as I’d worked hard to raise all that money so I was really disappointed, but I’m determined to get to the last leg of my fundraising.”
