Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service fire crews from Llanelli dealt with a small fire involving a microwave oven on Thursday afternoon (20 June).
The fire broke out in the kitchen of a terraced property in Tyishaf. Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly and arrived at the property to enter with two breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera.
The situation was dealt with safely and the property was thoroughly ventilated by means of positive pressure fan. One male occupier was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and given a precautionary assessment. He required no further treatment.
Station Manager Steve Richards, who attended the incident said, “The occupier had left cooking unattended in the microwave for an extended amount of time – 30 minutes for a bowl of rice. This caused it to catch fire. The occupier did have smoke alarms fitted in his property, however they failed to operate. It was lucky that he was alert and noticed the fire. Whenever you are cooking, please do not leave it unattended.
Crews carried out an HFSC at the property and other neighbouring properties and fitted four smoke detectors. Hot strike leaflets were also delivered to remaining properties on the street. If you would like a free Home Fire Safety Check, which includes the fitting of smoke alarms where necessary, please call: 0800 169 1234.
