Smiles came out with the sun over the weekend, boosting attendances across Carmarthenshire’s leisure attractions.
Pembrey Country Park welcomed 4,000 people through the park on Saturday and managed nearly 3,000 on Sunday, despite competing with Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon triumph.
Visitor figures at Pembrey Country Park were 10 times higher than the previous dark and dismal weekend, although even then there was a constant stream of season ticket holders.
Over the May Bank Holiday weekend there was a record-breaking 10,000 visitors – including 6,000 on Bank Holiday Monday alone – making it the best attendance in five years.
County Executive Board Member for leisure services, Cllr Meryl Gravell, said: “The sun has got its hat on and everyone is coming out to play! What a difference – it just makes everyone feel so much better. Long may it last.”
Car parks at Llanelli North Dock were full at the weekend too, with hundreds enjoying the sun on Llanelli beach as well as a charity cycle ride which drew hundreds of competitors.
Flannagans coastline café at Llanelli Discovery Centre reported its best trading day of the year, and Angela Edwards at the beach’s ice cream kiosk said: “The sun has made up for a lot of wet weekends. We shut up early the previous weekend with the promenade deserted in the rain. But we were flat out until 8.30pm Saturday and Sunday with everyone craving ice cream – we were having to source extra supplies.
“I think I must have served everyone in Llanelli. Joe’s Vanilla and mint flavours were the favourite for the seniors and blue bubble gum for the kids.
“There was a 50-mile bike ride starting and finishing outside the kiosks and every rider made a bee-line for an ice cream on the return because it was so hot.”
