MORE new young Carmarthenshire drivers are signing up and waking up to the benefits of Pass Plus.
The scheme, promoted by Carmarthenshire’s Community Safety Partnership’s Road Safety Action Group and the county’s road safety team, is aimed at those who have passed their test between the ages of 17 and 24.
The new drivers are able to sharpen up their driving skills at monthly sessions at Llanelli, Ammanford or Carmarthen fire stations for a fee of £20 with more than 100 already having completed the course in Carmarthenshire.
They focus on extra driving tuition over a three-hour period involving motorway driving; improving driving techniques and hazard awareness; night driving; coping with busy towns and city driving, rural country roads and thinking ahead.
County executive board and Road Safety Action Group member Cllr Pam Palmer said: “Pass Plus is a must attend course for young drivers who have just passed their driving test.
“Ironically when drivers rip up their ‘L’ plates and take to the road without supervision it is a high risk time for likely accidents. It is at this independent time on the road most drivers really learn how to drive.
“Pass Plus participants gives drivers that extra edge and lowers their chances of being involved in a collision or injuring themselves. This can substantially reduce their insurance premiums with companies signed up to the scheme.”
The scheme is supported by Welsh Government and promoted by the the Road Safety Group including firemen, road safety officers and ambulance men and police. The courses are run at Llanelli, Ammanford and Carmarthen.
