In 2015 Kidwelly will be celebrating the town turning 900 years old. The local AM asked the First Minister what support can be offered to local communities to increase the success of celebrations and to ensure a local legacy.

The town is preparing a variety of local celebrations to mark its 900 year history. A local committee, Cydweli900, has been formed to oversee the events. Keith Davies recently invited the Minister for Culture to Kidwelly to see first hand the preparations and discuss what support is on offer from the Welsh Government and wider organisations.

Heritage tourism projects are offered by Cadw, the Welsh Governments historic environment service whose work includes conserving Wales’ heritage. Mr Davies has since written to CADW requesting a meeting and asking what local projects they are involved in.

Representing Kidwelly in Cardiff Bay, Keith Davies AM said:

“Kidwelly has a strong and vast heritage, dating back to the days of Princess Gwenllian, with the castle still being a prominent attraction today. During the Industrial Revolution Kidwelly housed brickworks and tinworks, with the Industrial Museum showcasing this era of its past. It is for this reason that we feel it is especially important to mark its reaching 900 years old with a local celebration.”

“As well as celebrations at the time, we also need to take the opportunity to ensure a long-term legacy and benefits in terms of heritage tourism.”

The First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM, said:

“CADW has been liaising with local businesses to look at getting more links between the castle and the town. CADW will also be making investments this year in terms of bringing more of the castle’s story to life.”

“CADW’s objective is to increase the link between the castle and local business for the benefit of all.”
