A 24 hour business challenge for young entrepreneurs in Carmarthenshire will include a live presentation from Johannesburg via Skype on Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday.

This week RDP Sir Gâr’s Mentro Project will be hosting the 24 hour business challenge for young entrepreneurs in Llanarthne.

The competition is open to individuals or teams aged 16-30 years old and based in rural Carmarthenshire. Speakers including S4C’s presenter Heledd Cynwal, Tregroes Waffles’ Kees Huysman, and Best of Carmarthenshire’s Diana Vickers will be at Llanarthne Hall giving tips on everything from networking and social media to presentation skills and web presence during the challenge.

One very special presentation will be coming live via Skype from Johannesburg on Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday. Robin Wealleans of PictureWorks, based in Ty Mawr, is in South Africa making a documentary as part of the 67 minute project.

As it is 67 years since Nelson Mandela first started to campaign for human rights, the aim of the project is to get people to devote 67 minutes of their time to community work – one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service – as a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good.

Robin, whose company supplies LED screens and video projection for events such as Glastonbury and has worked with acts such as Jay-Z and Coldplay, will be talking to Carmarthenshire’s future businesspeople about the use of multimedia on a video link to Llanarthne Hall.

The session will culminate in ideas being pitched to a Dragons Den style line up and the best presentation will win £2,500 to invest in their business.

Sponsorship for the prize money has come from local businesses Clay Shaw Butler Accountants, Castell Howell and LHPhillips Accountants.

Mentro is run by Menter Bro Dinefwr and is part of the RDP Sir Gâr Rural Entrepreneurship project, providing free business support to young people aged between 16 and 30. Funding for the project has come from the Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales 2007 – 2013 through the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

They offer a free advice and guidance service on starting your own business and start-up loans and financial support available. They can also help with the creation of business plans and budgets.
