PUPILS from Coedcae School have been helping to clean up the community and the coast!
Year 9 pupils carried out a litter pick at the Hafan y Morfa sheltered scheme and surrounding Penymorfa area and Morfa park playground.
The 20 youngsters filled 40 bags with rubbish, of which nine bags could be recycled – much to the delight of the residents.
One the same day, another 170 Year 9 pupils carried out litter picks all along the coastline from North Dock in Llanelli to Pembrey Country Park.
A staggering 108 bags of rubbish were collected, with more than half (57 bags) recycled.
The clean up was carried out as part of the pupils’ Welsh Baccalaureate studies which aims to gives pupils a wide variety of learning experiences including the importance of enterprise and entrepreneurship as well as an awareness of sustainable development and global citizenship.
It was organised with the help of the council’s housing and Street Scene departments in partnership with Tidy Towns as part of the Clean Up Carmarthenshire campaign.
Coedcae assistant headteacher Jayne Jones said: “The pupils have to carry out 50 hours of community work as part of the Welsh Bacc.
“Year 9 pupils carried out the litter picks and Year 10 pupils also went along to the Llys Glanymor sheltered scheme to do some gardening.
“The residents were very grateful and the pupils really enjoyed it too, especially speaking to the residents as they stopped for a cup of tea and a chat.”
