A NEW board sport facility is on its way to Llanelli – wake boarding.

Matthew Smith, of Go Wake, has been given the go ahead to provide facilities for the sport, which involves surfers being pulled along by a cable similar to water skiing.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s planning committee has approved plans to install two 7m-high removable towers, ground anchors and cabling on land at North Dock, for the sport. The temporary permission will run for three years.

Development management officer Robert Davies said: “This is the first time something like this has been done at North Dock.”

An officers’ report to the committee said: “North Dock is included within the Millennium Coastal Park, as defined by the planning permission granted for the same in 1996, which carries a strong presumption in favour of recreation and leisure uses, together with allied and complementary uses. The majority of those permissions granted are allied to promoting the recreation and leisure facilities locally.

“The impounded dock is presently used by a variety of organisations and clubs for various water-based activities, as well as major events such as the Llanelli Triathlon.”

The intention is to operate the attraction between the hours of 10am-7pm Monday to Friday, and 10am–6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays over the Spring and Summer seasons, between the April1 and October 31 of the same year.
