Llanelly House is an 18th Century Georgian Town House. The house was built by Sir Thomas Stepney in 1714.

It was built on a site of an older mansion belonging to Thomas Lewis. It was built opposite St Elli Parish Church which is the oldest church in Llanelli.

When Sir Thomas Stepney died in 1772, the mansion was inherited to his son, John Stepney who lived abroad and had agents to manage his mansion.

The mansion was rented out to workmen and their families where by 1800 it had deteriorated and was of no use as a gentry’s residence.

When John Stepney died in 1811 the house was passed down to friends. In 1827, William Chambers Senior was in possession of mansion and started to do some renovation work on it.

By 1833 the house had been renovated after it being deserted for more than 60 years by the Stepney family and neglected by their agents.

In 1911 the mansion got passed down to Catherine Meriel Cowell Stepney and Sir Edward Stafford Howard.

At the start of the 20th Century, Lady Howard-Stepney restored the whole house.

Today it is being restored into a Heritage Centre where the public can view the archaeology and discoveries found while restoring. The public will be able to view hidden objects revealed under panelling including paintings from the early 1700’s.

Llanelly House Heritage Centre will be opening sometime in 2013
