SCHOOLCHILDREN in Swiss Valley are appealing to residents to clean up after their dogs.

They have designed posters to put up in the local community to encourage people to put their dog mess in the bin.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones visited the school along with the local member Cllr Giles Morgan and council waste awareness officer Tina Brice to judge the posters.

He said: “I was very impressed by the standard of the posters; the pupils came up with some great ideas to try and encourage people to clean up after their pets. I just hope residents will take notice of them; as dog mess left anywhere is a serious health risk.”

Three winners were chosen and three posters were highly commended. Each of the pupils was given a goodie bag.

Headteacher Ceri Morris said: “The pupils have carried out a lot of research into germs as part of their theme of study ‘Skin Deep’ and wanted to highlight the dangers of allowing dogs to foul in public places such as the school grounds. They were extremely enthusiastic and were very grateful to Cllr Morgan, Cllr Jones and Mrs Brice for listening to their concerns.”

Cllr Morgan said: “Council environmental enforcement officers carry out regular patrols in the area and anyone caught failing to clean up after their dog could be fined £75 or more if prosecuted in court.
