An EU wide programme that promotes healthy and active ageing has recognised the innovative approaches being taken in Wales by awarding the nation a three star status – the top award.

The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing wants all EU citizens to lead healthy, active and independent lives while ageing.

The allocation of the maximum three stars to Wales recognises the innovative approaches being taken in Wales to support healthy ageing and to enable people to remain happy and independent in their own homes as they grow older.

The award follows the identification of Wales as one of an elite group of 34 EU ‘reference sites’.

Carmarthenshire County Council is fully committed to the Ageing Well in Wales programme.

50+ Champion Cllr Tegwen Devichand, said: “The Ageing Well in Wales programme involves the council in concerted effort to make communities more ‘friendly’ to older people, including people with dementia. It also seeks to provide better prevention of falling – a major issue for Carmarthenshire and Wales.

“Through the Ageing Well in Wales programme, we will be able to share and develop good practice to help promote the independence of older people across Carmarthenshire.”

Newly-elected chairman of the 50+ Forum, Caroline Streek, said: “We fully support the Ageing Well in Wales programme and are delighted that Welsh efforts have been rewarded with three star status by the European Union.

“The Carmarthenshire 50+ forum regularly takes part in the research and fact-finding which is so essential to all successful policies designed to promote well-being in an ageing population, and we are proud to have made our contribution to this achievement.”

‘Ageing Well in Wales’ is a five year partnership programme that involves all of the major public sector agencies in Wales. The programme makes a vital contribution to the delivery of phase three of Wales’ Older People Strategy “Living Longer – Ageing Well” which was launched by the Welsh Government in May 2013.
