ADULTS with learning disabilities in Carmarthenshire are hoping to gain work as models and TV extras as part of an exciting new venture.

A ‘Model of Achievement’ agency has been launched at Llanelli’s Coleshill Centre for Economic Inclusion so that service users can tap in to the lucrative world of media.

Around 10 people have already signed up as models, and are currently being promoted to potential clients looking for people with a disability, health condition or impairment to act as models or TV extras.

It has been launched by staff working for COASTAL – a regional project in which Carmarthenshire County Council secured over £4million to develop a range of schemes for working-age adults who face barriers to employment due to mental health, substance misuse, learning or physical disability and chronic health.

Staff are providing supporting roles within the agency, including marketing, safety and administration.

Executive Board Member for Health and Social Care, Cllr Jane Tremlett, said: “This is a wonderfully innovative idea which just goes to prove that having a disability should not stop you from doing anything you want to do in life. This is what COASTAL and the Coleshill Centre is all about – empowering people to get over any barriers they face, to live independently and earn their own wage, just like anyone else.”

The Coleshill Centre was funded through Carmarthenshire County Council’s capital grant programme and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the ADREF project, as well as the Targeted Match Fund (TMF) through the Welsh Government.

The COASTAL project is part funded by the European Social Fund, as part of the 2007-2013 West Wales & The Valleys Convergence Programme.
