Users of social media are being reminded to watch what they say on social networking sites as burglars may be looking out for their next target.
Posts on sites such as facebook and twitter can tell a burglar what property you own, where you live and whether you’re likely to be at home or away.
So the next time you’re in an airport departure lounge and are about to share with your friends that you’re flying off to Spain for two weeks, think twice.
“Modern technology uses a lot of information that can pinpoint your location and this can be used by a burglary to determine whether you’re likely to be home or not,” said partnership inspector for Carmarthenshire Alun Samuels. “And if they know where you live, then they know the time to target your home.
“We’re not telling people not to use social networking sites, but just to think about how they use these sites and what information they put out there.
“Thankfully we live in a relatively safe place, but burglars are opportunists and will take advantage of everything they can.”
