Carmarthenshire Council has told regional AM Simon Thomas they are seeking a safety mark for the multi-storey in Llanelli town centre.
The local council say they are working with the British Parking Association and Dyfed Powys Police to obtain Park Mark safer car park designation for the multi-storey car park.
Mr Thomas, Plaid Cymru Mid and West AM, whose office is around the corner from the Murray Street car park, on Bres Road commented:
“I welcome the move to achieve a Park Mark designation. I would like to thank Carmarthenshire Council for responding to my call for a review of safety measures at the car park following the two tragic deaths at the car park. A meeting has taken place with the council’s parking services and Dyfed Powys Police’s community safety unit to assess the way forward.
“As someone whose office is in the town centre I want to ensure that the facilities are second to none. My staff and I use the car park.
“We must ensure shopping in the town centre or the in-door market continues to be appealing to people. The car park plays an important role. I would like to see it free to attract more shoppers into the town and create an even playing field with out of town stores.”
The council told the AM that since 2012 a new CCTV system was installed at the multi-storey car park. All of the CCTV units relay captured images directly to the CCTV control room in Llanelli Police Station.
Should officers or security guards observe a gathering of youths in any level of the car park; the police are notified immediately and called to the car park as a matter of priority.
The system of lighting in the car park has been renewed along with battery powered emergency lighting system. The lighting is switched on at all times whilst the car park is open to the public. The on-going project to refurbish the car park structure includes the provision of pedestrian walkways markings on each level of the car park.
