CARMARTHENSHIRE’S Executive Board Member for Housing has said she’s pleased we are ahead of the game following this week’s Government advice that more bungalows should be built for older people.

Ministers have issued advice to planners to highlight the need to match the supply of local accommodation to the needs of an ageing population.

Here in Carmarthenshire however, the council has already started the first phase of a development to build 38 bungalows across the county.

The first, in Morfa Maen, Kidwelly, and Seaside, Llanelli, are already well underway. Foundations have been laid and groundworks carried out in preparation for the exterior walls to be built.

More bungalows will be built at Pemberton, Llanelli, in a later phase, and other sites are also being considered.

They are the first council bungalows to be built in Carmarthenshire since the 1980s.

Cllr Tegwen Devichand, Executive Board Member for Housing, said: “This week’s advice from the Government proves that here in Carmarthenshire we are well ahead of the game.

“For us, the main aim is to provide much-needed accommodation for older people, built with their needs in mind and allowing more people to retain their own independence.

“In turn, the bungalows will help free up larger homes which are in high demand by local families.

“Of course, the build phase is also providing a boost to the local construction industry, which in turn helps the local economy – it’s a win, win.”
