OVER 1,000 people with disabilities or long-term health conditions are being supported to take their first steps towards training and employment in the county.

The £4million Carmarthenshire COASTAL Project has exceeded its initial ambition of enrolling 965 participants on to the programme, under which a range of schemes help people break down their barriers to employment.

The funding has thrown a lifeline to people who have struggled to gain employment because of mental health, substance misuse, chronic health condition, or because of a learning or physical disability.

The number of people enrolling on to the scheme increases daily, and a tailored package of support and training is created for each person.

Once qualified, COASTAL staff assist them to find and secure a job, as well as supporting employers to understand and meet their needs.

Project Lead in Carmarthenshire, Julia Wilkinson, said: “We’ve had some great success stories, not only in getting people to work but also in helping them with their journey in to work.”

The COASTAL Project is part funded by the European Social Fund, as part of the 2007-2013 West Wales & The Valley Convergence Programme.
