Following the discussions regarding the funding to the Mentrau Iaith in the County, Carmarthenshire County Council would like to refine the details that were announced by the BBC.

The Census Working Group was established by Carmarthenshire County Council with cross party support following the release of the 2011 Census results. The group met for the first time in April 2013 and it continues to collect evidence with the aim of proposing recommendations to the full Council in the New Year.

In February 2012 it was agreed to reduce the funding to the Mentrau over a period of three years. The Council have held open discussions with the Mentrau through the whole process and no additional cuts have been agreed upon than was already agreed. This was part of a broader process across all Council departments to decrease the expenditure as a result of increased pressure on budgets. It was not the decision of the Census Working Group to reduce the funding.

Following the release of the 2011 Census results in December 2012 the Council’s Executive Board agreed to assign the money that was taken from the Mentrau to support the research work and to address the recommendations of the Census Working Group. This fund has not yet been committed to any projects.
