A LLANELLI man and woman have been fined for dropping litter.

James David Anthony Jones, aged 26, of New Dock Road, and Hazel Louise Williams, aged 23, of Ynys Las, Llwynhendy, both pleaded guilty at Carmarthen Magistrates Court to offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The court heard that environmental enforcement officers were on patrol in the Old Lodge area of Llanelli on February 7 this year when they saw a man and woman walking along, both eating sandwiches that were in brown paper wrappers.

The pair sat briefly on a wall and the woman left the wrapper behind when they got up and walked off. As the officers turned the corner they could see that the man no longer had his food wrapper in his hand and the wrapper could be seen on the ground in the middle of the road.

The woman was issued with a fixed penalty notice for the offence; however, she failed to pay it. The man refused to provide his details to the officers. Both were prosecuted in court as a result.

They were each fined £40 and ordered to pay £75 towards prosecution costs plus a £20 victim surcharge.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “We are doing our best to clean up the county and we will not put up with people deliberately messing it up.

“Dropping litter is a criminal offence and can carry fines of up to £2,500 which demonstrates just how seriously it is taken.

“We live in a picturesque county which attracts thousands of visitors every year and anyone caught dropping litter will be fined
