CHILDREN across Carmarthenshire’s primary schools have enjoyed an eggstra special treat.

To celebrate British Egg Week (30 September – 6 October) Carmarthenshire County Council’s Catering Services produced a themed menu, shelling out on some favourite free-range egg recipes, from breakfast egg muffins to homemade egg and potato pie.

The menu aims to show children how versatile eggs can be and that they are excellent natural source of nutrients such as vitamin D which is needed for healthy bones and teeth and vitamin B12 that is necessary for energy metabolism. It is also important for the function of the immune and nervous systems.

Catering Services Manager Sandra Weigel said: “It is important that we educate children at a young age about the benefit of nutritious meals.”

As well as an eggs nutrition content there are many other ways they can be used, crushed up egg shells sprinkled around plants help prevent snails and slugs.

Executive Board Member with responsibility for catering, Cllr Colin Evans, said: “It is good to see our Catering Services team using national events such as British Egg Week to introduce different foods to children in a way that will get them excited about what they eat.”

Each two-course school meal costs £2.00, which compares favourably with the cost of providing a daily packed lunch.

Many families are eligible for free school meals, providing they receive certain benefits. Call 01267 246521 for further information.
