Plaid Cymru has stated that the Westminster Government’s sell off of Royal Mail could mean an end of universal service to our communities.
Plaid Mid and West Wales AM, Simon Thomas said:
“The decision to privatise Royal Mail is the beginning of the end of the universal postal service and the one price goes anywhere guarantee.”
“Private firms would cherry pick contracts and put shareholders first instead of the public good. As part of the Welsh Government we invested millions in local post offices across Wales. This sell-off is a new threat to the post office network and it could mean job losses in Llanelli if centralisation goes ahead.”
Plaid Llanelli Communications Officer Sean Rees added:
“This is yet again another classic example of the same old Tories putting profits before people and shareholders before service.”
“The decision to unnecessary privatise Royal Mail will have far reaching consequences for the delivery of postal services, businesses will be squezzed, post offices will be put at risk and prices will go up, the cost now of a first-class stamp is 60p and under privatisation this will increase further. Similar proposals were put forward by Lord Peter Mandelson in the last Labour Government and they were defeated.”
“Plaid Cymru will stand by hard working postal workers across Llanelli in order to completely oppose this privatisation being forced upon our country.”
In response, Plaid leader Leanne Wood has also written to Business Secretary Vince Cable to express concern and will aim to coordinate cross-party talks at the National
Assembly to see if an agreement can be reached on establishing and make the provision for a new ‘Post Cymru’ public postal service for Wales.
Plaid Cymru has launched an online petition ‘Post Cymru – Post i Gymru / Deliver for Wales’
