The National Botanic Garden is hosting a Star Party on Friday (November 8) with the help of the Swansea Astronomical Society.
With clear skies, you will have an opportunity to see the moon and other heavenly sights such as the Andromeda Nebula (pictured). You can also learn all about the new comet, Ison –known as The Comet of the Century!
You won’t get to see Ison on Friday but, if you get up early in the morning before sunrise and the sky is clear, it will be visible through binoculars next to the star Zarijava in Virgo and – if it survives its encounter with the sun on November 28 – it could be a brilliant, seeable-by-the-naked-eye object.
SAS member Colin Miles said: “If you have been inspired by Brian Cox and the BBC TV programme Stargazing Live, maybe you’ve even bought a telescope: come along, bring your telescope if you are having problems, and talk to the experts.”
In addition to the telescope clinics, there will be various displays and talks entitled ‘The Development of Telescopes’ and ‘Our Wonderful Universe’.
All activities are in the Great Glasshouse where the cafe will be open for refreshments. The Star Party is on from 6pm-9pm and entrance is £3 per person with under-16s free. Follow the Star Party signs.
